Goji Berries (also known as wolfberries or western snowberries) are also known as Lycium barbarum. The Goji Berry is native to Asia, and people in Asia have been using this brightly colored fruit for more than 2,000 years as a herb and food supplement. Grown in the vast Himalayan Mountain region, Goji Berries have long been known for their health benefits in Far Eastern medicine.
Dried goji berries may be eaten raw or cooked, or reconstituted in hot water before using. Their taste is somewhat similar to raisins although they may be drier, more tart than sweet, with a slight herbal scent. They are often used in soups, combined with chicken or pork, vegetables, and other herbs.
Goji Berries are an excellent healthy snack. A handful a day makes a great addition to children’s lunchboxes. They are also delicious in your muesli and cereals, yogurt, or ice cream. Try adding Goji Berries to your jams, pastries, pies, cookies, cakes, muffins, or scones. You can even use them in smoothies, liquidized as a drink, in soups and stews, curries, or sauces.
