Cat’s claw is a woody vine that grows in the canopy of the Amazonian rainforest. It is harvested for its inner bark, although sometimes the roots are also collected for processing. The herb is also known as sparrowhawk nail and hawk's claw, which reference the plant’s claw-like thorns.
In Peru, the cat’s claw has been used for thousands of years by the Asháninka tribe, from whom much of the world's supply is garnered today. In traditional systems of healing, the herb is used to counter a variety of inflammatory disorders. Today, several trademarked supplement products include extracts of a cat’s claw.
